Obituary of Harold Frederick Baumer

Harold F. Baumer ("Bud") of Penfield, New York, passed away February 7, 2017 at age 90. Bud is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sarah; children, Linda (Rowland) Blake, Cheryl (Frank) Smith, Chris (Barb) Baumer and Eric (Lynda) Baumer; grandchildren Sarah, Daniel, Devon, David, Eric, Brad, Brian, Kristen and Timmy; 4 great-grandchildren. Bud was born on February 5, 1927 in Rochester New York. A graduate of Irondequoit High School, Bud entered the NROTC Program at Cornell University, served in the US Navy and earned his degree in Electrical Engineering. He started his post war career at T.H. Green Electric, obtained his Professional Engineering License and enjoyed a long and fulfilling career as a consulting engineer. He and his brother-in-law Ted founded Baumer and Knowles Consulting Engineers and were well respected for their work, integrity and kindness. Throughout his working life, Bud was very active in Rochester Rotary and took to heart the belief of service above self and helping others. In 1949 at a New Year's Eve party, Bud met Sarah Williams. They would marry in1951 and build a house in Penfield in 1953, where they would live for 63 years and raise 4 children. Bud's love for his wife Sarah ("Sal") and his love for family and friends were a constant part of his life, perhaps the most important part. Whether it was a holiday family and friends gathering, a party with his high school friends, socializing with his neighbors or serving on a committee at Church, he truly enjoyed the people in his life. He was happiest when surrounded by friends and family. Friends often became the same as family to Bud, and all were welcome any time in his home. Bud dearly loved his wife Sal and his devotion and dedication to her, remains an inspiration to our family. They enjoyed many activities together including traveling to Florida, birding, dining, playing bridge and even just reading or watching TV together. In his last days he remained concerned for her welfare, and would ask about her every day. Each of us assured him that they would take care of Mom for him, as well as take care of each other. Bud liked to keep active. He was an industrious tinkerer and builder, and there was never a project he didn't enjoy. Whether it was building shelves for mom, building furniture, a house on Henderson Harbor, a boat hoist at the lake, an addition to Eric and Lynda's house or repairing something for a neighbor or the local Red Cross, Bud was happy to be busy. In his later years Bud was blessed with 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He and mom were never happier than when they visited. In lieu of flowers, Bud would request that you show someone you love an act of kindness, tell them you love them, give them a hug.
