I was a high school classmate of "Chuck", as I knew him then. Our senior English class conducted a debate about the Vietnam War. Chuck argued, in a very mellow yet convincing way, against the war. Prior to then, I was a bit intimidated by him, but thereafter as I learned more about him, my admiration grew. We will miss him at our 40th class reunion this August.

I met you when you were changing your name and was so puzzled by why someone would do that. I did not understand that or your headdress at all, and it seemed so strange to me.
Years later I moved to Penfield and always admired a beautiful garden on Jackson Rd. I saw it was yours. I then also saw you on the Penfield TV channel walking through the beautiful gardens with the town supervisor at the town hall. I was mesmerized. I was so impressed at your knowledge and appreciation of what effects certain plantings, trimmings etc. would mean years from now. Little did I know, you would not live to see the changes you created. Where I was ignorant and judgemental of you at first, you made me see that I should not make assumptions about a person. Thank you for that.

I met Maha back in the '70s, learned some meditation techniques that I have never forgotten. More powerful, though was the memory of the man, his calm, his serenity, the glow of peace that was around him. I moved, remembered the man, forgot the name. Came back, did not remember the name until I saw the obituary.
The world is the poorer for his passing, but I am glad that he is out of pain.

I've never met Mr. Oesterly, but I heard of his Japanese garden. I grew up in Japan and moved here 2 decades ago. I feel that Mr. Oesterly found inner peace and the deep balance of nature in his Japanese garden. May he rest in peace. May the spirits of his garden gently guide him.

A great man, mentor and teacher. I wish I had known Charles for a longer time. I feel his loss and am saddened. At the same time I feel so happy to have known him.
Thank you Charles, for the things you taught me, and the encouragement you gave me in gardening and in life. Your strength and gentleness were always so very apparent.

We will miss 'Charlie', a client and friend who always exuded a sense of confidence and integrity.
He shared his difficult experience of Vietnam and how its senselessness led him on a search to find peace in the Sikh meditation that focused him on seeking truth, maintaining an impeccable and honest work ethic and to share his fruits of his special skill set with family and friends.
Thank you for sharing your philosophy and enriching so many others.
God Bless you and your family. Eternal peace Charlie.

I remember you saved my life when we were very young and I was stupid. You are the kindest brother-in-law a person could want. I will miss our deep conversations. The most special day of my life was when you said "I love you" to me. May the music play on - peace and love always. @>-------------

Charles, Maha Atma Singh Oesterly was my very first yoga teacher when I was only 18 years old and he was only 21. He introduced me to Kundalani Yoga at MCC. I will never forget him. Even though I moved from Rochester in 1973 he inspired me to practice yoga which I still do today. When I invited my friend, known today as Sada Nam Singh Khalsa, they became life long friends. I am sad to learn that Maha Atma Singh suffered in his last months on this earth but so happy that he had his loving family and friends with him. God Bless.

"Charlie" was a great man, and a wonderful friend to many. I met Charlie at the time in his life when he was neighbors with my Parents. He always got us laughing and was always working hard at one thing or another. My Father, who worked on gardening (year round) was in awe of Charlie's Garden and pond.
I listened and learned much from him when he talked of his Reef tank. The Corals and fish were so Beautiful and he loved the challenge of nurturing them, just as with his gardening....
I think most of all, I will remember Charlie with that very contageous smile.
When I close my eyes.....
I can see it right now!
