Obituary of Eugene J Kraus

August 4, 1937 -- January 11, 2024

Eugene John Kraus (Gene), beloved husband of Sherry Kraus, died on January 11, 2024.  Gene was born in Syracuse, NY on August 4, 1937, the middle child of Gertrude (Morgan) Kraus and David Kraus.  He spent his early years in Saranac Lake, NY which left him with a love for the mountains that lasted a lifetime.  At the start of his first grade, the family moved to Albany, NY where Gene attended public school.  Gene always had a love for the study of mathematics.  The underpinning of his later long career in academia was an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Princeton University, a Master’s degree from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. from the University of Tampere in Finland.  Gene and Sherry traveled a long road together of 57 years of marriage.  While, sadly, their little family never included children, they always had much- loved pets.  In addition to Sherry, Gene is survived by his older brother, David Kraus, his brother-in-law, Robert Stokes, and his nephew, Robert Curtis Stokes.   He was predeceased by his sister, Anne Kraus.  

Gene’s happiest times were the family trips to the White Mountains of New Hampshire each year where he loved to hike.  Gene included Sherry in everything he did, introducing her to outdoor sports such as hiking, swimming, rock-climbing, cross-country skiing and many other activities.  Gene’s passing leaves an empty space in the lives of those who loved him.  He will be sorely missed. Memorial services for Gene will be on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 with visitation starting at 1:00PM followed by servicel at 3:00PM at Jennings,  Nulton & Mattle Funeral Home, 1704 Penfield Road, Penfield NY 14626.
