Obituary of Dorothy J Tetro
Dorothy Jane Tetro
Penfield, NY – January 5th, 2024
Dorothy was the loving mother of Vicki Helmling, Sue (Jim) Teasdale, and Linda (Jeff) Teglash; grandmother of 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; and aunt to many beloved nieces and nephews. She was daughter to the late William and Mabel Morrish.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph; infant daughter, Marjorie; sister, Nancy; brother, Bill; and son-in-law, Gerry Helmling.
Dorothy dedicated her life to teaching and nurturing hundreds of young students over nearly four decades; she had an unwavering passion for education and supporting children. In 1967, she was instrumental in establishing Nazareth Lutheran School. As both a teacher and later principal, Dorothy devoted 39 years to the school's ministry and the lives of her students. She took immense pride watching the school grow over the decades, from its beginnings as just a Pre-K program to eventually serving students through 8th grade.
While an educator, Dorothy received prestigious honors including the 1995 Lumen Christi Award for District Educator of the Year and the 2006 Lifetime Ministry Service Award from the English District. This latter award was even created specifically to recognize Dorothy's profound dedication and influence as a teacher.
Beyond the classroom, faith and family were central pillars of Dorothy's life. The tragic loss of her infant daughter only strengthened her religious devotion and bonds with loved ones over the years. She was the driving force behind family trips to Disney World and regular trips to visit grandchildren at every chance she could. Those who knew her also knew her great passion for hockey and the Buffalo Sabres; she loved attending hockey games!
Dorothy leaves behind a lasting legacy of compassion, kindness, and service. Her memory will remain in the hearts of all the students she inspired over nearly four decades as an educator. Her love for her children, grandchildren, and all her family will forever be remembered as the embodiment of warmth and unwavering support.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Funeral Service on Saturday, January 27 at 10:30am at the chapel in Elmlawn Cemetery in Buffalo. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or another charity of choice.
