My deepest condolences to Dr. Goldblatt's wife & children. I am devastated at his passing. We met 16yrs ago under the worst possible circumstances. I was rushed into URMC ED with traumatic injuries to both of my legs. Dr. Goldblatt happened to be on call that day and not only spared me from amputation but saved my life. He continued to be a part of the orthopedic team that cared for me. Over the yrs visits were fewer. I came to need him in 2024 for a knee injury only to hear he was no longer with us. Again I say devastated, but I know the soft spoken guardian that watched over me 16yrs ago is still watching over me today. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace Dr. John P. Goldblatt.

I can’t believe it’s been a year. It’s really it me hard this last week, when I first learned if you’re passing I was numb. I didn’t believe it, it couldn’t be true. That changed this week when my nephew tore his ACL and the one person I would true to touch him is no longer with us. I feel so lost not knowing what to do without you here to be my hero. You are the only Ortho Surgeon in Rochester I trust to touch my family. We have the best working relationship, we just got each other and I knew what you wanted and expected with your trouble patients. You counted on me to be tough and not let their tears scare me away from getting them better. You were one of the very few people I could count on to give me a fantastic reference when I applied for my current job here in Florida. You would be really proud of the things I have down here and the AT program I have built. I can’t tell you how much I need you know more than ever. Matthew is my everything and I don’t want to entrust him into just anyone’s hands. I can’t even begin to imagine what your family has gone through, I hope they find some comfort in knowing how much you meant to others and how many lives you touched to such positive ways. Please watch over Matthew when he does have his surgery and guide the surgeons to perform a simple ACLR without any complications.

All my condolences to the family of Dr Goldblatt. He just repaired my ACL a year ago , I chose him specifically because he had done my husband's ACL 10 years ago and when I was going with my husband to his follow up appointments I was so impressed by Dr Goldblatt's bed side manners and his compassion towards his patients. When I tore my ACL a year ago I requested Dr Goldblatt as soon as I found out. I called his office and he got me in within a week to assess the situation and 7 weeks later he did my surgery. I feel a deep sense of sadness over him passing away and he was only my surgeon. Prayers are with all of you who were close to him mostly his wife and children. Marie Scott

Dr. Goldblatt operated on my son when he was 17 years old, his quick thinking after a surgery saved my son’s ability to walk. He said to me after it was stressful for him and that he wasn’t sure he would want to operate on children after my son. When my son healed, he invited Dr. Goldblatt out to golf to show him that his life was better and he was fine. My son loved him and always said if he ever needed another operation on his other leg he would want Dr. Goldblatt to do the surgery. He made the world a better place. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family Godspeed.

John helped me so much when I broke my leg and subsequently needed surgery on both knees. He treated not just my injuries but also treated me as a whole person as I struggled with being incapacitated. He made me laugh with his dry sense of humor and he was proud of me when I saw him some years later and told him I had completed a 26+ mile extreme hike and was back to doing the activities I loved. Fast forward 10 years to when he helped my daughter who needed an ACL replacement from a skiing injury. There was no one else I was going to trust but Dr. Goldblatt! She is still in recovery but I am so grateful for the access we had to his incredible skill and human touch. I am so sorry for your family’s loss. I am without words to console you. I worked with John when he was a brand new intern here at URMC and I immediately liked him! He was so gentle, humble and collaborative right out of the gate. I had to pleasure of working with him throughout his residency at URMC and I continued to follow his career. I was so pleased when he returned to us after completing his fellowship and would encounter him on occasion over the years in the hallway, He still remembered me and we'd have a quick chat and move on. I respected him so much both as a professional and as a human being. I always referred friends and family members to John whenever I was asked about an orthopedic surgeon and all who received care from him always raved about him! I can only imagine the devastation for his family and his colleagues at the sudden, unexpected loss of their dear husband, father, friend and colleague. The world is certainly a lot less bright with John no longer in it-he will be sorely missed.

Though it has been many many years since I have seen John, I am so saddened by his unexpected passing. As a fellow Browncroft resident, I was fortunate to know John and his family growing up even though I was a few years older. John was an outstanding teammate and quiet leader as a teenager for a local Recreation softball team at Humboldt Recreation Center where I worked as recreation leader while I was in College. A gifted 2nd Baseman and hitter, he and his Browncroft Neighborhood friend(Will Rumbold) led their team to the National Softball Tournament for 15 and 16 year old youth to Massillon Ohio in 1984 where they placed in the top twenty in the country. I was honored to coach this assortment of youth from the neighborhood for the City of Rochester, Department of Recreation. Too this day, I am proud of what they accomplished on the field but off it more importantly.
As we looked back as former coaches, we feel most proud of what the players accomplish in their life, careers, family .. .
John and many of his teammates did that by becoming Physicians, Captains in the Police force, Assistant General Managers of Local Professional teams, Roofing business, entrepreneurs and much much more! John exemplify many traits that have been admired over the years. Kind, Supportive, Driven . . . His humble beginnings were nurtured by his family and friends and continued throughout his life adventures. His memory will live on for those that he met and influenced. Rest in Peace

I was shocked at my degree of sadness in hearing of his passing since I have not seen him since 2002, and we have not kept in contact. But I understand the reason for my emotions - he was one of the most likable and admirable people I have ever known.
He was the most respected resident in the orthopaedic residency at Rochester. There was never a negative word said about John - he was universally respected by his peers for his intelligence, work ethic and humor.
I can only imagine the loss that his family and so many others are feeling in Rochester and elsewhere.

I was one of John's patients. John was not only a superb surgeon but he was genuinely interested in getting to know me as a person. I'm sure this was the basis for his relationship with all his patients. During clinic visits, after a thorough medical discussion, we always delighted in pivoting to talking about our families and other interests. I served on the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery as a public board director and we enjoyed discussing the importance of Board Certification for his profession and for his patients. I own a manufacturing company, which was of great interest to John, and we talked about his earlier background as a mechanical engineer. Sometimes I would run into John in the Rochester area and in his warm intentional way he would want to stop and catch up. On one occasion I was dropping my daughter and her young son, who has special needs, at the airport. John happened to be on the same flight and approached us at the gate offering to help my daughter and her son board the flight. My experience with John is that he loved people and wanted to help them in any way he could. I will miss seeing John. His family will be in my thoughts and prayers. John Erbland and family.

John was such a wonderful friend and physician. I first met John as a medical student on a sub-internship in orthopedics, he was a chief resident at the time. I remember one night we called him in to the ED around 2 A.M for a trauma case, and despite the hour, he spent 30 minutes after we were done helping me decide on my career path. Despite his love of orthopedics, he spoke of the long hours that never end even when you become an attending. The time you would be forced to spend away from family and friends. You had to truly love it, and if there was any other field you could love, you needed to consider that instead. Oddly enough John helped me choose ophthalmology for my career. But John LOVED orthopedics. At 2 A.M. or 5 P.M., he loved his profession and he loved helping patients and students alike. John and I stayed in contact over the years and he became my doctor and surgeon for several orthopedic ailments. I could text John anytime and he would fit me into his schedule without hesitation. I recall one day when he fit me into his office schedule, he sat down with me and asked, "I'm 2 hours behind, have you ever been this far behind in clinic?" He then proceeded to ask about my work life and family without even asking why I was there. He didn't rush through the visit with me. His compassion as a doctor and as a human was unmatched. He was competent and confident as a surgeon, but also so very humble and unassuming. Someone else mentioned the look out of the corner of his eye, a twinkle, and his wry smile and I could not agree more. I will always remember him this way. I consider myself so lucky to have known John and had him as part of my life. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Years ago, my granddaughter broke her collarbone while playing soccer. She was referred to Dr. Goldblatt. As we were waiting for her appointment, I saw a familiar figure walking across the waiting area. I said to my granddaughter, "There's your doctor." Dr. Goldblatt's walk was just like his dad's. I'll remember Dr. Goldblatt for being one of the people I most enjoyed working with at Sawgrass Surgery Center. He was content, easy to be around, and consistently placed the important things above the rush. He talked about his family often and without meeting them, I was always well-apprised of Dallan and Justine's latest activities. We commonly exchanged podcast recommendations. One day we got into a heated discussion over an episode and he interrupted the usual 90s hip-hop and had me put "This American Life" on during a case so the rest of the room could also weigh in. We had so many good belly laughs in OR 2, often instigated by his expertly executed "eye expressions". We joked about having the exact same 1st car, a 1984 Toyota pick-up. (though I think his was a little newer than mine!). I gave him shit for the ski jacket he wore to work--- lookin' straight out of the early 90s with that thing. He held no pretense, because he didn't need one.
He was commanding and competent, while still being approachable, generous, and kind. He took his work seriously, but made the room laugh all day long. He prioritized pt. care and his patients felt that. (Sooo many coworkers entrusted him with their sports medicine needs) I was one of many who benefitted from the “workplace Goldblatt clinic” as he examined my knee, even materializing in the MRI clinic from upstairs when there were some red-tape questions about x-rays. This happened during a time of financial and emotional hardship for me. The gratis care was so appreciated, but the ease and reassurance was equally priceless.
We’re better for associating with him. He left us too soon, but he left us better than he found us.
Xoxo

To all of John’s family, I give my sincere condolences. John was a great friend and an OUTSTANDING surgeon. I first met John when he was just 11yrs old. Myself and his brother Robert were friends and classmates at 31school. We all went to East High School where we became close friends. After my time in the Navy(23yrs), my knees were in bad shape. I asked my wife, who is a nurse at Strong who does she suggest, she told me “John Goldblatt is the best!” I was stunned when she told me! When my appointment came up, it was like we never missed a beat! We shook hands and gave each other a big hug and laughed! We talked about old times in school and the paths that we all took. It was awesome! That‘s who John was to me. Not only my doctor, but my friend. He will be missed greatly by all. Much Love to him and his family.

My deepest condolences to Dr Goldblatt's family. My wife and I were both patients. We were so overwhelmed by Dr. Goldblatt's compassion and caring approach no matter if your problem was big or small. He always took the time to explain in detail his thoughts and diagnosis as if you were his only patient. He was always proud when he spoke of his children. His presence in this world will be missed, but his memory will live on.

My sincerest condolences go out to John's family, friends and colleagues. John was my knee surgeon a few years back and from my first meeting with him I felt very reassured that he was the right doctor for me and for the surgery. Not only was I confident in his abilities but I was, also, so pleased to be working with someone who showed compassion, decency and a caring professionalism throughout the process. He was one of a kind.

To the family and friends of Dr Goldblatt, I am so sorry for your loss. I used Dr Goldblatt for my knees, shoulder, and elbow and he was always so detailed in his explanations of what he found and how it all worked and what he was going to do to make it better. He always made sure that I understood what he was saying and was never in a rush to go to his next patient. I'd even see him out in the community and he'd ask how I was doing. He will be dearly missed by all.

What a beautiful write up for such a wonderful man. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and the U of R family. John took care of my daughter over the course of three years for two ACL tears. He was such a passionate, caring man. Always went above and beyond in so many aspects. Words cannot describe how he touched our lives as a medical professional, a friend, a teacher, etc... This just doesn't seem real and we will always hold his memory close. All our love and respect, The Haggerty Family.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Goldblatt. As a nurse in the Ortho Clinic I had the privilege to work with him and also become his patient. He was the most caring and thoughtful man with the best sense of humor. Years back I had taken care of his father who noticed my shoe lace was untied and proceeded to instruct me on tying the perfect double knot! From that day forward every time I saw John he would ask me if my sneakers were tied correctly. Such a loss is unbearable. He will be missed by so many. Keeping you all in my prayers.

John was an amazing person. I was so fortunate to have him as my surgeon, but even more fortunate to call him a friend. He was brilliant, compassionate, and giving; but he also had this amazing, dry, sarcastic sense of humor that made me laugh out loud every time I had the pleasure of talking with him. Julie and kids, sorry does not even begin to capture my feelings for your devastating loss. John was treasure.

Julie and family - I was shocked and very saddened to learn of John’s passing. I had the honor of working with him for many years as administrator for the Department of Orthopaedics. While brilliant and successful, he was a humble, approachable man. I loved that he drove a truck to work - that said a lot about who he was. It was typically the first vehicle in the parking lot. John cared deeply about his patients and was highly respected by them for his outstanding care. He is greatly missed by us all.

My deepest, heartfelt condolences to his loving wife and children. I have had the pleasure of working with John for 17 years, when I first met him, I was a tiny bit intimidated, he had the most intense eyes and when you were talking with him, he listened so closely and quietly. Many times, throughout; working in the clinic, I would need to fix a patient appointment or squeeze one in, he never said no, he always accommodated the patients and never made me feel like I was bothering him or hindering what he was doing. As time went on, I needed my tendon repaired and sought him out, he talked with me and set me up as his patient and when it came time for the surgery, he came in early to check on me before we went into the operating room. I have never trusted someone as fast as I did him. I just knew he would do right by me and boy I was never disappointed, his skill set amazed me and how it would actually heal, and the way it would look, he was on the mark. On and off over the years I would see him in clinic and he always greeted me by my name, he never forgot me and even if it had been sometime in between, he would give me a hug and asked how my family was and how my shoulder felt. I will never forget you Dr John Goldblatt, you truly inspired many and your compassion kept us coming back because we knew you had the heart, drive, courage and integrity to keep our Ortho team going and thriving.

I was so very sad to hear of John's passing. I worked with him in Sports Medicine when he first started at URMC Orthopedics in 2003. He was one of the best people I have ever worked with. He was so laid back, patient, funny, and always ready with a smile accompanied by a funny anecdote. We had many laughs throughout those years, He made work so much fun.
I left Ortho in 2006 and transferred over to the hospital and since then, every time I walk past the Ortho unit, I find myself hoping that I might run into him just so I could say "hi". He was a great friend and I feel like I am a better person for having known him.

My condolences to John's family, friends and colleagues. I have been a patient of his for many years and for many problems including knees, elbows and shoulders. Without his skills as an orthopedic surgeon my life today would not be as pleasurable as it is. Having a daughter who attended the University of Vermont and a sister who lived in Burlington, John and I would have interesting conversations about our trips to Vermont including restaurants to go to. In fact, despite his busy schedule, these conversations comprised most of .our time together in his office. Recently, as I recall, we deviated from our Vermont discussions and talked about his golf experience playing with his brothers. Apparently, his golf prowess was lacking.
John was truly a very nice person who genuinely conveyed an interest in his patients. Coupled with his skills as a surgeon , placed John at the absolute top of his profession. His family should be forever proud of the person John was.
I will miss him dearly as a surgeon and more importantly as a friend.

My deepest sympathies to all family and friends who were blessed to know Dr. Goldblatt. I met Dr. G. 15 years ago when our son, then age 9, had knee issues no one else could identify. Dr G. was able to diagnose and fix our son's knees so he was able to resume all the activities a young child enjoys. With this confidence in him, I started seeing him for my knees. He successfully performed my surgeries as well. Over the years, we shared many stories about our lives and families. I know he was immensely proud of his children for pursuing their individual interests and working hard to be the best they could be. He had a genuine kindness about him and absolutely lit up anytime he spoke about his family.
I know there is nothing right now that can fill the void Dr. Goldblatt's passing will leave on so many hearts. I pray for God's presence to be felt in a mighty way for comfort today and in all the days that follow.
My deepest condolences,
Susan Gould

I was a very recent patient of Dr. Goldblatt. He performed successful knee surgery on me in October and what a gift to be free of pain! But his greatest gift to me was the time he took to explain everything to me. So many doctors today, especially those who specialize, are so rushed. Not Dr. Goldblatt. I truly felt cared for by him. When I heard of his death I was stunned and saddened. The world is a little less bright today without his presence. Truly, the good die young!

My heart breaks for your family’s loss. Our minds and thoughts are with you.
Mike and I have talked many times about Dr. Goldblatt over the course of the last 10 years as a role model both for his role in his family and at work. He was the perfect example of someone who was able to be a great father and husband — and a physician. At many times throughout our journey when I was feeling discouraged, Mike would point out Dr. Goldblatt. He was someone who had “figured it all out,” and was the kind of father and doctor Mike has aspired to be. We are forever grateful for the role he had in introducing Mike to ortho and mentoring him along the way.
During residency, I always enjoyed the time spent with Dr. Goldblatt and Julie. They were among the kindest people I met during the program. Over the past few days, we have spent time reminiscing over some memories — at the Bills game, skiing, and in the OR — while drinking a Lawson’s Liquids in his memory. As Mike said many times, Dr. Goldblatt was just “one of the good ones.” He was loved by all.
We are so sorry we are not able to make the services on Saturday. We will be thinking of you.
