Obituary of Edward E. Gartland
Edward E. Gartland of Penfield died peacefully on October 10, 2019 at age 92 surrounded by family. Predeceased by his parents, Edward A. and Vida (Pugsley) Gartland; grandson, Michael Johnson; niece, Donna Guempel; brother-in-law, Joseph Dutton; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Smythe. Survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Patricia Dutton Gartland; sister, Frances Guempel; cousin, Gwen Scalpello; children, Patricia Nannen (Jay), Sheila Xander (Albert), Edward Jr. "Ted" (Elizabeth), Mary Ellen "Molly" Johnson (Christopher), Michael (Irene), Colleen Harmeyer (John) and 17 grandchildren, Jake, Erin & Kaitlyn Nannen, Patrick & Michael Xander, Olivia, Meryl & Edward III Gartland, Sarah & Ryan Johnson, Nathan, Brandan & Meaghan Gartland, Sam, Emma, Greta & Heidi Harmeyer; many nieces and nephews. Ed was an Eagle Scout who loved his country. After graduation from John Marshall High School, Ed served in the South Pacific with the Army Air Force in WWII. He entered the Naval ROTC program at the University of Rochester, graduated in 1951, and went to the South Pacific to serve on the battleship Missouri during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Naval Reserve in 1981. Ed retired in 1986 from Kodak where he was an Engineering Supervisor. He was a devout Catholic and daily communicant who made over 50 retreats at Notre Dame Retreat House. Many happy times were spent with family and friends at "Club 71" swimming, playing cards and singing with the player piano. He enjoyed serving as a docent at the Eastman House. Thousand Island Park and The Plantation in Leesberg Florida were favorite vacation spots.
No prior calling. Edward's Memorial Mass will be celebrated Tuesday 11 AM at St. Joseph's Church, 43 Gebhardt Road, Penfield. Interment St. Joseph's Cemetery. Those wishing may direct donations to The Christophers,The Lady of Fatima Shrine in Lewiston, NY or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
