With great sadness, Paul, I read of Barbara's passing. The memories are many, from that first frosh mixer, was it 1957, yes the joy of your wedding, the evening spent with you when I visited and introduced you to Meg, my adopted daughter since 1994, and the holiday cards each year that were especially enjoyed. Yes words. too, about roller coasters, not exactly Barbara's greatest joy--your children and you were that, Paul.
May you find a sense of peace in the love of your family. each of whom are surely blessed with the special miracle we call memory.
Always remembered. Paul, was your and your mother's presence at my parents' funeral, May the Lord bless you and keep you and yours, Paul, and whether the words are Jewish in heritage or otherwise, may they be apt, this time and always.
Warren

What a dear and special friend Barbara was. We met as students at the University of Rochester and that was the start of a lifelong friendship. I have many fond memories from the past 59 years.
First it was that beautiful yellow prom dress she lent me when I didn’t have one of my own. Barbara was the most intelligent woman I ever knew. She had strong political views and was an active participant in Common Cause. She was passionate about her causes. We had similar leanings and each had husbands who generally held different opinions. Even after I moved out of town, we could pick up and spend time together as if no time had passed.
We shared many of the milestones in our lives. We both became teachers and then stayed at home when our children were young. Her daughter, Cherie, was born the same year as my daughter. Her son, Joel, was born the same year as my son. We consulted often on the joys and challenges of raising beautiful, smart, and sometimes impossible daughters and sons who got involved in all the antics of growing from little boys to grown men. She was so proud of both of her children and their accomplishments. (Even the zebra car!)
What a beautiful home Barbara created. I can still picture it now. The Fall colors, the dramatic drum table and other African accents. And the garden: she took such pleasure in the beautiful pink chestnut tree in her front yard and the other bush…was it a burning bush? I was always invited to see them in full bloom.
Barbara was a vociferous reader. We belonged to a small book club with other U of R women for several years and read the likes of Kurt Vonnegut, Philip Roth and many others. Barbara was a 20th century reader and liked to hold a hard copy of a book in her hands.
Music…what a beautiful, strong voice she had. She enjoyed singing in the choir at U of R or just in the bathroom by herself! She was a talented pianist and it was sad for her when she was no longer able to play the piano as she could when she was younger.
The highlight of our friendship….lunches out. There were many of them and we loved experimenting. We always ordered something different, gourmet and exotic as could be and enjoyed sharing with each other, Dim Sum style. I was always amazed that years after we had eaten at a particular restaurant she could remember not only what she had ordered, but also what I had ordered as well.
I was so fortunate to have such a special friend, and I shall miss her dearly.
RIP Barbara
