Obituary of Geoffrey D. McCain

My best friend. Keeper of my secrets. My life witness. My brother. August 11, 1985 – Feburary 20, 2016 While stationed at the Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas, a son was born to our parents: Valerie Sue (Ireland) McCain and Dennis Lee McCain. On that day, August 11, 1985, I remember peeking through the window for my first view of my baby brother, Geoffrey Devin McCain. My father held me high up on his shoulders, and I could hardly hold on with excitement. The day was beautiful; the warm, glowing sun and the calm, refreshing breeze were just a small testament of the blessing that was just placed within our family. As a small boy, a favorite memory that Geoff kept close to his heart was visiting the old family farm. Exploring the woods and discovering old treasures was what founded his love for the great outdoors. It was the simple farm life that he enjoyed: Following our Great Uncle Sonny's footsteps as he worked through his daily barn chores and Geoff trotting along beside our uncle's tractor out into the fields. He soon discovered Boy Scouts, and joined a troop in Livonia, NY. Camping and fishing quickly became favorite activities that he shared with his father on the weekends. Geoff also attended, and participated in World War II reenactments, and enjoyed learning about history. Legos were Geoffrey's first love, and he quickly learned how things worked by tinkering with anything he could get his hands on. If it was broken or junk, Geoff could fix it. He was self-taught in many areas. One summer, he taught himself how to play the drums, and was skilled enough to join the high school band. Computers and technology were his all-time favorite because they are constantly evolving, and he never grew bored. He built his own computer, learned how to program, code, and hack. When he wasn't outside exploring, Geoff was deep inside the World Wide Web, absorbing everything like a sponge. Geoffrey attended most of his school years at Livonia Central Schools, in Livonia, NY. He transferred, and eventually graduated from Penfield High School, in Penfield, NY. He anticipated joining the Air Force Cadet program, and had an interest in joining the Air Force one day; training to be a pilot. It was undoubtedly the hardest day of my life. I lay beside you until the end, just like I promised. In return, you gave me courage and strength while you lay comfortably in peace. Just as the sun was shining the day you were brought into our lives, that same beautiful sun was shining 30 years later. The sun will always shine, and we will always be reminded by its warmth. Geoffrey is survived by: Mother, Valerie Sue (Ireland) McCain of Bainbridge, NY; Father, Dennis Lee McCain, Penfield, NY; Sister, Tracy Cheri McCain, and fiancé Joseph Gialanella of Fairport, NY with nephews, Devon Geoffrey Ostrander, and Forrest Joseph Gialanella. Step-Parents: Mark Perovich, of Conesus, NY; Barbara King, of Penfield, NY. Step-sisters: Nikima Perovich, and Nahtana Perovich. Grandparents: Doug and Virginia Ireland, of Bainbridge, NY. Private burial service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery, in Penfield, NY. Special thanks to all the nurses, doctors, caregivers, teachers and therapists who cared for Geoffrey while he resided at home. Also to the staff, and his roommate "Flip" at Monroe Community Hospital. Our greatest support came from all our family and friends, who have supported our family during this journey, and we cannot thank you enough.
