Obituary of Ellin Chu
We share the loss of Ellin Chu with the utmost disbelief and sadness. She was born November 23, 1932 in Brooklyn, NY. Ellin grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, lived on Long Island and in Rochester, New York. She is predeceased by her parents, Isobel Janowich Resnick and David Resnick. She is survived by her three children, Amanda, Joshua and Steven, five grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Ellin received her Bachelor of Arts in Modern European History with honors, as well as her Master of Arts in Library Science at Indiana University. She also pursued post graduate studies in Anthropology at Columbia University. A humanitarian and humorist, Ellin devoted her life to helping others, both professionally and personally. She began her career as a Young Adult librarian and was on numerous committees, actively researching, publishing, and consulting. She won many awards and was published in both books and periodicals. After retiring as the Head of the Sports & Literature division she volunteered at the Rochester Public Library.
Ellin passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 2nd, 2015. A memorial service will be held at the Penfield Library on November 22, 2015 at 2pm.
We are all smarter, funnier, and thriftier for having had her in our lives. Ellin's family wishes to thank both the practices of Dr. Christine Stewart and Dr. Zachary Kramer of the Lipson Cancer Center, who both were so kind and caring with her. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Lipson Cancer Center, or to WXXI.
In honor of Ellin, please support your local library or independent book store, and go read a book. On paper.
