Obituary of Bernard B. Brody

Dr. Bernard Brody, of Penfield, aged 89 years died peacefully in his sleep on Sept 2, 2011. He had an illustrious career starting at an early age. After obtaining a chemistry degree at the University of Wisconsin at age 20, he worked on the Manhattan Project, first at the University of Chicago and then at Monsanto in Dayton, Ohio. He moved to Rochester in 1949 to attend the University of Rochester Medical School. While doing his residency training in internal medicine, he was drafted to serve in the Korean War. After completing his military duty and residency, he established his private practice. Approximately ten years later he was asked to head the clinical laboratory at the Genesee Hospital and later was appointed as the Senior Vice-President for Medical Affairs. In addition to his busy career in medicine he held board positions with the Gannett Foundation and later with the Freedom Forum whose mission is to promote freedom of the press, speech and media around the world. As a part of this work he became one of the founding directors of the Newseum in Washington, DC. Dr. Brody was also fascinated by business and the philanthropic world in Rochester and contributed his time to and served on the boards of too many charities to mention. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. He is predeceased by his first wife Ruth Miller Brody who died in 2002. He leaves behind his wife Jocelyn Hicks-Brody, his daughters Sarah Epstein (David) and Rachel Bandych (David), his granddaughters Shaina and Hannah Epstein and his dearest of friends John Keim (Elizabeth) and Gary Keim (Michelle), all of whom loved him dearly. Dr. Brody's funeral arrangements will be private and his ashes placed at Arlington National Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the School of Nursing at the University of Rochester, Lifespan, the Palliative Center for Caring at St. Ann's Home or a charity of choice.
