Goodbye my friend and teacher. Rest easy in the arms of the Lord. We will meet up again some day, of that I am sure. And none too soon.
2Cor 5:8 We are confident, [I say], and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

I remember Mr. Howland as my social studies teacher in CHS. I really did not like ss but he made it fun with all his Medieval collection. At least he made us laugh when he had the girls try to hold up those weapons especially the mace. He will be missed even though it's been over 35 years since high school. Rest in Peace Mr. Howland.

I can only echo what has been written by the many Charlotte Jr- Senior High students -- Mr. Howland cared deeply about his students and opening our eyes in a way that was unique. He shared many pieces of wisdom. And, his approach has impacted me throughout my life. I remember well the armour and swords he would share with us. And ocassionally, because of his bad back, he would lay on the floor while teaching. I also remember well when Elsbeth and the children opened your home to our small psychology class for a wonderful dinner. Not only did we have the best strudel I've ever had, but we were able to see Mr. Howland's collection of clocks, swords etc. Mr. Howland is a person that's legacy is with all of us. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mr. Howland was one of the greatest teachers at Charlotte High School. He taught us to share his love of history and we will always remember him. I will always remember the Washington, DC trip and his pencils. I will always cherish the opportunity I had to have dinner with Mr. Howland and his wife right after the CHS 2009 Reunion with Nancy Wentworth and Lori DeHond. My deepest sympathies go out to his wife and family.

I was lucky enough to go to washington DC with him 2 years in a row. Not only did I get to go, but I got to go to the Smithsonian museum with him and Mr Boyer and learned more from them than most did. I have always remembered him fondly over the years as being the best teacher I ever had and always compared my other instructers through out the ... See Moreyears with him. I didnt even mind the pencil on the head. He was not only a teacher but a respected friend. My thoughts and prayers to his family for comfort that only God can give at this time.

Mr. Howland was one of my favorite teachers in High School. I've thought of him often through the years and wondered many times where he was. I've been to the mountains a few times and saw the Howland name there, never had the nerve to stop and see if it was his. He'll be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family. May he rest in peace with God.

Mr. Howland was one of the most memorable teachers in my life. He made you feel like you were the only one he cared about, you were the favorite, the special one. He made History come alive with his collections and artifacts. Even though I miss you, I will never forget you, Mr. Howland. I only wish I had the chance to let you know how you had touched my heart.

Mr. Howland was an extraordinary man, and a very influential teacher. By making it real, through his passion for history, Mr. H. opened my mind to history and made it "fun" to learn. You could tell that he enjoyed teaching. Many of the lessons he taught remain with me still. A great man, and one the world will miss. My thoughts and prayers are with his much loved family.

Mr Howland had a lot of impact on me when I was a student at Charlotte High School (I may be near 50 but he will always be Mr Howland to me). I remember him as passionate about what he was doing (I remember him stressing the importance of doing what you love as the most important factor in deciding what you wanted to do with your life). And he was such a wonderful person.
I am so sad about his passing, which is more poignant to me because I recently exchanged email with him and was hoping that I would see him on my next visit to the area.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family. God bless you, Mr. Howland!

Mr. Howland was my homeroom teacher for a couple of years, as well as one of my Social Studies teachers. He is one of the people responsible for my love of history; he made it real and alive. But he also had time to spend just talking with us outside of the class period, you could tell he had a genuine interest in us as young men and women.
May the grace and peace of Christ be with his family and friends.

I had Mr Howland for Social Studies in 8th grade at Charlotte High School I believe. I remember him poking the kids on the head with a perfectly sharpened #2 pencil if they were to walk into class late. He had a quick wit & a good sense of humor. I think that is essential in his profession. I believe he will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

My prayer is now answered.
Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace : according to thy word.
For mine eyes have seen : thy salvation,
Which thou hast prepared : before the face of all people;
To be a light to lighten the Gentiles : and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
Rest peacefully, Harvey.
Elsbeth, we're all here for you.
God bless,
Ed and Amy Becker
