Obituary of Richard Schonblom
Richard Baker Schonblom, age 73, of Penfield, passed away on December 10, 2024, at the Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center in Rochester after a long, heroic battle against cancer.
Affectionately known to many as Rick, he was born on October 4, 1951, in Buffalo, New York, to Kenneth and Janet Schonblom. Raised in East Aurora alongside his older sister, Marsha, Rick grew up in a close-knit family that instilled in him the values of love, hard work, and compassion.
Rick studied business administration at the Rochester Institute of Technology. After graduating, he dedicated 35 years to finance administration at R.I.T., serving as the institute’s bursar and assistant controller.
Throughout his life, Rick cherished his family above all else. His passion and integrity towards those he loved was unwavering. He met his beloved wife, Carol, and they were married for 39 wonderful years.
Together, they built a beautiful life and raised their daughter, Anna. Rick was known as the most wonderful and caring person you could ever meet, but most importantly, he was the best father and husband.
Rick was an avid Buffalo Bills fan, holding season tickets alongside his brother-in-law, Ted Reynolds, and cousin, Steve Harrington. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed his annual fishing trip to Rice Lake each year. Rick spent many wonderful summers at the Reynolds family cottage on Keuka Lake, swimming, kayaking, boating, and sitting on the dock.
Rick leaves behind a legacy of countless cherished friendships formed through genuine connection and unwavering kindness. He often offered a listening ear and words of wisdom and knowledge, providing comfort and guidance to those around him. Rick made a lasting impact on all those he met and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Reynolds Schonblom; daughter, Anna Schonblom; sister, Marsha Kiriazides (Dennis); niece, Alexandra Collison (Chris); nephews, John Kiriazides (Emily) and Jason Kiriazides (Cate); as well as beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
To honor Rick’s memory, calling hours will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, from 2 – 4 p.m., followed by a brief service at Jennings Nulton & Mattle Funeral Home. The family invites loved ones and friends to join them at Midvale Country Club for a reception immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center in Rick’s name.
