I had Mr. Platek for math as well. He would not remember me, but all of his students remember him. A great teacher. Condolances to the Platek family.

Mr. Platek was my math teacher at PHS. He walked the stage with us at graduation. We headed off to college, and he headed into retirement. One of my favorite memories is when we walked into class on Halloween to find him with the lights off, in a full vampire costume—complete with cape, fake blood and teeth. Instead of spending the period on a math lesson, he told us a riveting version of the story of the Attica Prison riots. There were many other days when we’d spend only a fraction (see what I did there?) of our class time on math, as he’d get caught up talking to us or telling stories. Mr. Platek was a great teacher and an even better human being. We were lucky to have known him, even if only for the short years of high school. Sending love to his family and friends.

So sorry to hear of Gary's passing. He was always Mr. Platek to me as he was my math teacher in 10th grade. I remember him being very skilled and knowledgeable in his craft, always friendly yet knew when to be in command of his class. Always fair to every student no matter their understanding (or lack thereof) of math. So glad to have been FB friends with him for these past few years. He will be truly missed.

Gary Platek was the absolute best math teacher during my 7th-9th grade years at Dennonville. He was so great at making math understandable and enjoyable. He was always cheerful and like able and presented as someone who loved his job. I think of him often. So very sorry for your loss. He clearly was a wonderful person at home as well as in his work.

To the family, you are in our prayers at this time. I officiated many basketball games with Gary and not only was he a very good official but a better person. When he umpired softball, he was always very helpful when I was the Section V coordinator. He will be missed and he will be remembered as a very caring individual.

R.I.P. Gary.
You were one of the finest umpires and referees I had for my Cardinal Mooney and Bishop Kearney teams.
More than that, you were a wonderful human being.
And I loved interacting with you and reminiscing when you worked at Greystone.
You will be sorely missed, my friend.

Since I began umpiring this year, with my great friend and teacher, we reminisced often and have a forever bond! We umped our last game on May 23rd, and friend and fellow umpire Ray O’Neil and I made the last game of 2024 a Gary Platek Tribute Game. With the Penfield & Fairport players along the foul lines we made sure all knew who Gary was and the special role and commitment he had umpiring and scheduling for girls softball. We’ll continue to remember Gary next year in May, in his honor and memory. RIP our friend! Scott Thon

A few retired PHS teachers meet once a month for breakfast and have been since '97. Gary always had great stories to tell us about our days together at PHS. There were times when our breakfasts would end up near lunch time. The laughing was almost constant. We will miss him a great deal. I know that I will. Rest in peace buddy.

Gary was (to start) my 7th 8th 9th grade math teacher at Denonville ... but much more. I remember his 1969 Corvette. He taught me a lot of skills that went way beyond math, although he was a great teacher and motivated me for my career in Engineering. I'll never forget the first class where he established his expectations for the year and believe me we all paid attention! He taught me to keep a notebook (which he collected and graded) and I did that for my entire employment life. Years later I regularly saw Gary at Greystone and we would laugh about the Denonville years. Had the pleasure of golfing with him last summer and asked him to be in my foursome for the Julie Golf tournament this August which I know he was looking forward to. A hole will be dedicated to Gary "in his memory" at the Tournament this year. Was always proud to say that I knew Gary Platek and considered him a friend.

To the Platek family: sincerest condolences for your loss from the Catan family. You all know what an amazing man Gary was. What you may not know is the positive impact he had on so many thousands of lives. For me personally, Mr. Platek helped me get past my fear of math. I came out of grammar school with a complete distain of anything related to math. In 9th grade, Gary helped me past that and helped me to enjoy it. As years went by, we kept in touch on and off. Gary was always so positive in his attitude and steadfast in his love for his family which he often expressed. We were all blessed by his presence during his time with us. I pray for all of you as you deal with this tremendous sudden loss. I know he's watching over all of you. God's peace and love to you. May Mr. Platek rest in peace.

Prayers to the family! Mr. Platek was a class act as a teacher and a person. He was very encouraging to me as a student and whenever I would see him after I graduated high school. We stayed connected via Facebook in recent years, he was the first to tell me how proud and happy he was for me when I posted about any career milestones. I will never forget him!
