Obituary of Mary McLaughlin

Mary Catherine McLaughlin passed away peacefully on February 9, 2024. Predeceased by her parents, Mark and Anna (Madigan) McLaughlin; brothers, Thomas, Mark, Eugene, Paul, Alfred, Raymond McLaughlin, and sister Anne Dawe. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary was born in Rochester to Irish immigrants during the Great Depression. Equal parts County Clare and County Mayo, she was the youngest of eight children. Mary grew up in a tight-knit family who pulled together during the tough times of the 30’s and 40’s. She watched four of her brothers enlist while she was still in grade school and thankfully watched them all return safely.

After graduating from Our Lady of Mercy High School, Mary quickly became known as a hard worker in various secretarial jobs, including many years working for Monroe County.

Mary was extremely proud to be a member of the mighty McLaughlin family. Not one to be intimidated by having seven older siblings, she was known to give as good as she got when it came to ribbing from her older brothers. Family gatherings were everything to her, from Rosewood Terrace to pool parties at Cheswell Way and many places in between. Mary loved being in the middle of it all, often being a key source spreading news throughout the family, keeping everyone connected.

Friends may call Friday, February 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Jennings, Nulton & Mattle Funeral Home, 1704 Penfield Road, Penfield, NY 14526. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, February 17 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 2617 East Ave., Rochester, NY, 14610. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at St. Ann’s for their loving care in Mary’s last years.
