Our home town has lost a good friend with the passing of Bob. I echo the feelings and memories set forth in the notes submitted by Laurie, Roger and Noreen. All of us (“our gang”) shared the Browncroft neighborhood from White Village to Jerry’s gas station to the Atlantic Ave. elementary school. Bike riding was an every day activity interspersed with basketball at Bob’s house, playing in the woods behind his and Roger’s and Noreen’s house, sitting on Roger’s backyard stone fireplace talking for hours, swinging on Carol Kempton’s swing in her back yard, playing baseball in Allen’s yard and my yard, exploring all of Ellison Park, playing tennis and hockey and sliding in the Park, playing football at the school, riding our bikes over the “jump” on the front field of the school, playing ping pong at my house, having dance parties at his house, trick-or-treating everywhere, riding the school bus to and from school, collecting baseball cards with guidance from Carl, delivering papers with Tom and so much more.
After finishing college in 1967, I didn’t see Bob again until April of 2006. Carol and I were at a friends house celebrating a birthday when in walked Bob and Karin; I was at the door and instantly recognized him. In the 17 years thereafter, we would occasionally meet up with Bob and Karin, often at the Advent House garage sale; Bob and I both worked in the furniture tent where we loaded cars and spent many hours talking of our youth.
Bob was a gentleman and very easy to be with. He spoke often about the “old days”, his family, his time with the Penfield Fire Department, his retirement, his many projects involving helping his neighbors with home maintenance matters and whether we would ever play pickleball. One day when he happened to be driving past our house in Victor, he saw us engaged in the process/effort of putting our swim raft out on our pond for the summer. True to Bob’s form, he drove to our house and offered to help. When done, we sat by the pond and again reminisced about things in our history.
Bob was a good man, the kind that doesn’t come along everyday. He was gentle, quiet, easy with a smile and dedicated to all things family. We are all better for the time we spent with him. We will miss you, Bob. You left us way too early.

Pops courageously fought so hard to stay here and made it a point to get to all his grandchildren’s games. We will forever miss you Pops every time we embark on a home improvement project, on every sideline and when looking at the head of our table at our family get togethers. Words cannot express our never-ending love. You were the greatest father, father-in-law grandpa and husband to Nana. For two and a half years you fought the good fight and in the end, you made the decision to leave this world comfortably peacefully and on your terms. Your generosity was felt not only by friends and family but also by those you helped during your decades of service in the Penfield Volunteer Fire Department. We will always be reminded of all the good times and will always feel your presence knowing you are in our hearts forever.

Bob was always at the ready to help with a project a neighbor was doing. He was a man with a sense of humor and loved his wife Karin, his children and grandchildren, beyond any measure one can imagine. Bob made everyone's life better with his friendship and kindness and will always be remembered for his extra modest nature. There is no doubt that this remarkable man will always be remembered as one of the best friends anyone could ask for and to have known. Bob made the life of everyone he knew better, just simply by being his pure, kind, caring, modest and honest self, a true gentleman. You will be missed by all those whose lives you touched. Rest in Peace Bob; YOU have MORE than EARNED your Wings.

Karl and I extend our sincere condolences to Brian and the entire Shull family on the death of their dear father, Robert. As others have said, we did not know Robert, but we knew and deeply cared for his son Brian who took care of us both over 2 medical practices and for many years. Few human beings have the kindness and compassion Brian showed us; his brilliance at his PA career was exemplary. I will always remember his wonderful sense of humor in dealing with our (especially Karl’s) aging problems. A highlight for me was sharing with Brian the adventures of raising children. Some of the stories shared were hilarious. I was so glad to see him happily married to his beautiful wife and the father of such beautiful children. We both miss him very much. Robert must have been a wonderful man to have raised, along with his wife, such an exemplary son. May Robert rest in peace.

Dean and I want to extend our deepest condolences to Karin, Brian, Bonnie and their families. Bob was such a great guy and it was fun growing up with him right next door. I remember having bon fires in his backyard with his family and the neighborhood kids and swimming in his pool. For a time when I was around 11 or 12, I think I had a small crush on him. I would see him out by himself shooting hoops in his driveway and would work up my nerve to go over and shoot a few with him. I’m sure he wasn’t thrilled playing with a “girl” but he was kind enough to put up with me for a little while. I probably only saw him a few of times after he and Karin got married and I moved out of the area but whenever I ran in to him, it was always nice to see him and catch up a bit. He was an all-around great person, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Dear Robert Shull,
Although we did not know you personally, we knew you through Brian—your extraordinary, caring, gently charismatic, knowledgeable, confident son, who also was our Physician Assistant (PA) across two practices & until just a few months ago. Brian is that fruit you & Karin planted, nurtured, & sent forward to serve, as you did—with honor, commitment, & integrity.
It is with humility that Art & I thank you for your service to our country; workforce; & community; that we also thank you for your love of family, colleagues, longtime friends, & neighbors.
The way to love someone is to lightly run your finger over the person’s soul until you find a crack, then gently pour your love into that crack. (Hplyrikz.com).
In all your life’s work for country, community, friends, others, &,most especially, for beloved family members,
you prepped, prepared, & poured hefty portions of Love into their lives. We, all thank you.
Bob,
To paraphrase the ending of Patrick Maloney’s poem, “The Navy Veteran:”
You are now at your [final] homeport of freedom
Under a red white blue [heavenly] sky
From Reveille to [earthy] Sundown
Your USA [Eternal] colors will fly.
Respectfully,
Art Smith & Arlette Miller Smith, PhD

This is such sad news. Bob was so much a part of my childhood. Remember "back in the day" when you could take off through the neighborhood on your bike and see who was ready to set up a backyard game or play hide and seek. We would still be out there roaming free till our parents called us in at dark. And there is Bobby in my Kindergarten class photo. So many of us spent our entire school life in Penfield and I was lucky enough to have Bobby Shull right there along side! Bless you Bob for so many lovely memories.

I am so sorry to hear this news. I have so many fond memories of Bob when we were kids growing up next door to each other on Browncroft Blvd. One day, we could be hiding out in the tree-house behind Bob’s house, the next day, we were Lewis and Clark exploring the “gully” behind our houses all the way to Irondequoit Bay. As we grew older, everyone in the neighborhood would hook up in Bob’s driveway to shoot hoops and play “horse” until dark, or, work on his big black Buick. We went our separate paths after high school, but when we would meet again as adults, I was so impressed on how he served his country, loved and provided for his family, and cared about his community by serving in the fire department for all those years. And in times of sorrow when my parents passed, Bob and Karin would show up to comfort Noreen, Marilyn, and me, no matter how much time had passed since we had seen each other last. Karin, Brian, and Bonnie, my heart goes out to all of you and your families. Please know, Bob will remain always in our hearts.
