For three years Shirley and I were roommates at Nazareth College. We graduated in May 1979. Shirley was so organized and dedicated to her major in Speech Pathology. I was majoring in Art Education. I enjoyed collaborating with her on any of her school assignments which required some artwork. And she used me as a Guinea Pig for hearing tests. But Shirley was more than Speech Pathology. She smiled a lot. She was very funny. Shirley was a rock in her family. So very loved. Shirley's mom would make homemade jelly which we would eat with crackers...but only after our studying was done. She would tell me stories about her family and growing up in Penfield. We had fun in college.
There's only one problem that still makes me salty. I was at least 30# heavier than tiny little Shirley. And one year at a combination Nazareth/St. John Fisher event Shirley challenged me to a beer drinking contest. Not only did Shirley win, by mid afternoon she had to get me back to our dorm room and put me to bed. There was never a rematch.
In the years since college graduation Shirley never forgot my birthday or Christmas.
If Shirley called you her friend then she was your friend for life.

I had the good fortune to work with Shirley at BOCES for many years. Shirley was a person who inspired those around her to be the best that they could be and cherish moments of learning and success no matter how small. She was a gifted educator in so many ways as she continued to find new and creative ways to reach students, and always with a passion for teaching and individualizing interventions. When a student succeeded, Shirley's smile was so bight you could see it across the classroom. I would often go to her to learn new communication tools I could use in counseling sessions with students. I developed many new skills along the way thanks to Shirley and her excitement to teach me only increased my willingness to learn. I fondly remember our chats after school and the laughter we all shared with Shirley. In a world where kindness and compassion sometimes seem hard to find, this wonderful lady willingly gave of her time and talent so that others would feel cared about and valued. I wish her family peace in the difficult days ahead and please know that my thoughts and prayers will be with you.

My deepest sympathies to the Roat family. I'll always remember her as "Mrs. Roat" and the many times us "girls" (Jolie, Lisa, Kelly, Kristina) sat around the kitchen table at holiday times for get togethers. I'm sending my thoughts and prayers.
