I was saddened to learn, belatedly, on a recent trip to Rochester that Mr Duntley had passed away. He had a massive impact on me when I was a student at Barker Road Middle School in 1998-2000. I was advanced one year in math, which meant I was joining the 7th grade class when I was in 6th grade. Understanding that I would be overwhelmed by arriving at a new school, Mr Duntley was at my home room on the first day of school and showed me the route to his math class. This act of kindness sticks with me 25 years later. That was the beginning of three years of wonderful experiences in Mr Duntley's class and after school in MathCounts. I owe a great deal to Mr Duntley for encouraging me to develop my abilities and making me comfortable at a difficult stage of life. His passing was a great loss to the Pittsford community.

Through the remarkable ability of the Internet to connect us, I am extremely saddened to find out today about Jeremy's passing. I was fortunate to have Jeremy as a teacher for a math summer program between 7th and 8th grade. I remember that Jeremy always encouraged me to discover the answers for myself, rather than having them passed onto me. Even more distinctly, I remember Jeremy's practice of reading poetry to us during our scheduled breaks from the grindstone. One of these poems ("Birches" by Robert Frost) left a lasting impression on me—but, unable to recall the poem in enough detail myself, I reached out to him a few years later asking for it, leading to the email exchange I've attached as screenshots below. Through our correspondence, Jeremy demonstrated not only his personal passion for making a difference in the lives of his students, but how the best teachers never stop growing themselves. That Jeremy's journey through life came to an abrupt end is truly sorrowful. But there is solace in this somber moment. I happened upon this email again (which lead to my discovery of this memorial page) because I (now a college graduate and PhD student) am about to begin mentoring other young people—in fact, they are about as old as I was when I knew Jeremy. I think it is important and urgent that I discovered the news about Jeremy today of all days. I will aspire to be the inspiration to my mentees that Jeremy was for me. On a final note, it turns out that Robert Frost actually knew about the cyclicality of life when he wrote "Birches," and I can't say it better than he does, so I will just ask you to read his words. https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/44260/birches
Thank you for reading this far, and my condolences to Jeremy's family. God bless.

I am so sorry for the loss of your husband and father. He was a wonderful man. As I high school teacher I worked with Jeremy as his students were transitioning from 8th to 9th grade. He was always very concerned about each child and wanted to make sure that they were being placed in a high school class that would challenge them and encourage them to grow both personally and mathematically. Jeremy loved those kids! And they loved him, too. They have told me many stories in these recent days about things that Jeremy did to encourage them, to make them laugh, to challenge them to be their best selves. He has touched so many lives with his good sense of humor and his caring. He leaves behind a great legacy and will be sorely missed.

I would like to express my deepest sympathy to Jeremy's family. I was a former staff member for CRMS and work down the hall from him. (I retired in June 2019) Jeremy was always very polite and respectful to me, we usually were coming into the building at the same time or making a cup of tea around the same time. He was well respected by his students, who always showed great affection towards him. Sending prayers and positive light to his family, may you feel the love and support from many people.

I was saddened to hear about Jeremy's passing. He tutored my daughter in math several years ago. He was such a positive influence on her. He had a gift to help children and give them confidence and help them believe in themselves and their ability that they could understand something so foreign and achieve positive results. My condolences on your loss and the loss to the entire community on losing such a gifted teacher. He will be sorely missed.

My son is fortunate to be in Mr. Duntley's math class. Mr. Duntley is his most favorite math teacher and he is always patient, inspiring, supportive and super nice to students. He is an intelligent teacher and always ready to help his students to solve challenging math problems. It is a big loss to his family, to the kids, to the school, and to our community. Jeremy will be deeply missed by all of us. Our deepest condolences to Jeremy's family.

I am so very sorry for the loss of your family member, Jeremy......I worked at both middle schools and we were friends. Jeremy was a fine, fine educator and cared deeply for his students and their successes. He was polite, helpful, professional, and a true gentleman. During his time as a union representative for the school, he helped teachers and paras alike with issues. Jeremy will be missed by all who knew him.

Even though I only knew Jeremy the last few years, he had such an impact on my life as well as my son Averil, and he will be missed deeply... Jeremy was such a unique, compassionate, beautiful, loving human being, who touched the lives of many and of myself and Averil... He was someone you could talk to about any difficulties or struggles in life, and had an incredible sense of humor and could definitely put a smile on my face or make me laugh and know it’s going to be “ok” when times were tough... Jeremy told me countless times of how Averil was such a special kid, who lit up the hallway with his smile... Jeremy too... had this genuine radiance about him...
Our deepest thoughts, prayers, condolences to the Duntley family and friends...
Rest In Peace my dear friend, companion, shoulder to lean on... Soar to the angles high above...your memory will be held close to our hearts... Tracy, Averil & Elijah Chue

Dear Duntley Family,
My sister, Elizabeth and I were both tutored by Mr. Duntley almost 10 years and 2 years ago, respectively. We were very sad to hear the news, as Mr. Duntley holds such a special place in both of our hearts.
Mr. Duntley was one of the best (and favorite) teachers we had in Pittsford. He made all his students feel equally special, empowered and cared for. I just turned 27 and every day feel more influenced by the people who touched my life early, particularly Mr. Duntley. At the time Mr. Duntley first started tutoring me, I was struggling through my Calculus course. By the end of the year, I received an A in the class and a 5 on my AP exam.
However, these accolades are only a very small portion of the impact that Mr. Duntley had on me that year. He empowered me to have confidence in my intellectual ability, to embrace my quirkiness and to pursue things in life that made me laugh.
Elizabeth, my parents, other sisters and I feel truly blessed and honored that Mr. Duntley was part of our lives and will always remember him, as well as keep him close in our hearts and prayers. Our deepest sympathies are with each of you at this difficult time.
With love,
Emily, Elizabeth and the Carroll Family

Jeremy and I would always lose track of time, sharing and talking in my office or his classroom about students, about learning, about life. He was such a brilliant man, but his compassion and love for teaching and working with his students is what truly defines him as an educator. We are all lucky to have seen him work, if only for a moment, we are better for it.

Jeremy taught his students so much more than math. He started a unique program at Calkins Road Middle School that truly let his students learn without limits and reach their potential. He was an advocate for both the program and each of his students. He understood the distinctive learning needs of his students in a way that many people did not and challenged them to be both inspired learners and kind-hearted people. Between our two daughters, they had him as a teacher for 6 years. He instilled confidence in them and pushed them to be their best selves. We often joked that Mr. Duntley came to dinner each night because so many of our dinnertime conversations started with "Well Mr. Duntley said..." We are appreciative of the positive impact Jeremy had on our family and the multitude of families in the Pittsford community. He will be deeply missed by the many people whose lives he touched.

Mr. Duntley is a such wonderful, passionate and creative math teacher at CRMS. My son was in his math class saying Mr. Duntley is one of his favorite teachers and his very creative teaching style and great enthusiasm in the math world has inspired him a lot and many other students in his class. Because of his inspiration and fun teaching, the students always desire to go to his math class each day for learning and exploring the math problems and challenges together. He will be always remembered and loved. Our sincere condolences go out to Mr. Duntley’s family. Wish the peace and comfort be with his family during this most difficult time.

Mr. Duntley was the best teacher I have ever had. I was very fortunate to have him and he taught me many things, the majority of which were outside of math. He cared for each and every one of his students and helped us succeed and reach our full potential. He made each of us feel special and the most important way for me was boosting my confidence. He let me know that I was meant to be in the class and that I could do anything if I believed in myself. I will forever remember his kindness and generosity as well as his humour.

Jeremy had a lasting impact with his teaching and tutoring to numerous kids, including of our son Peter Mizes. Enclosed is a picture from the 2011 National Mathcounts, where he was the coach for the New York State team (Peter, right). He hosted the kids at his house as he prepared and mentored them for the event, including a number of fun swimming parties. Peter will be graduating from MIT with a math major this May.
