Obituary of Thomas W. Askin
Thomas W. Askin, Sr.
Died February 25, 2015. Tom was born November 5, 1920. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Jane Clougherty Askin, 5 children: Thomas Jr, (Jan), Daniel (Zsuzsanna), Maureen (Brian Lovell), Carolyn Franz (Earl), Richard (Heidi), and 11 grandchildren: Molly Askin, Tim Askin, Orsolya Meyer, Szabolcs Erdélyi, Kelly and Katie Lovell, Nolan, Sean & Karen Franz, Keefe & Jarret Askin, many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother John F. Askin and sister Mary Askin Clougherty, and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Tom was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was a smart, clever and hard-working man who always had a quick smile and the greatest laugh. He had a generous interest in everyone he met. He could tackle any job from auto repair, household repair projects, to designing and finishing an addition to the house. He enjoyed working with wood and work outdoors.
Tom's college career at Duquesne University was interrupted by his military service during World War II. He served from 1943 – 45 in the Army Air Corp. After his service he returned to Duquesne University and graduated in 1947 with a degree in Chemistry. He then went to work for Mobil Oil Corporation where he worked for the pipeline division as a Corrosion Engineer.
In 1949, he married Jane, joining a large Irish family. They moved to Plainfield, NJ where their 5 children were born. In 1961 they moved to Rochester, NY and became active in the parish of St Joseph in Penfield where he served as a Trustee, a member of the first Parish Council, a Eucharistic Minister, and member of the fundraising committee when a new church, school and convent were built.
He retired in 1982 after 35 years with Mobil Oil Corporation. In retirement, Tom travelled extensively with Jane. They visited all 50 states, much of Canada, Ireland, England, Scotland, mainland Europe, Russia, Australia and the Carribean. He liked exploring the world, but was so proud of his children and grandchildren and loved to visit them as well.
Aside from his family, Tom also loved watching football and playing golf. He was a member of the Old Codgers golf league for over 10 years. At the age of ninety he was issued the first Member pass (card #1) to play golf for free "throughout the future" which he carried in his wallet and showed to anyone he could.
