Obituary of Katherine C. Atkins

Katherine Carter Atkins, age 83, passed away December 28, 2014. The daughter of Elsie and Lewis Carter, she was born in Cumberland, MD and grew up in Springs, PA with her parents and four brothers: Jim, John, Bill and Lewis Jr "Bud". She attended high school in Frostburg, MD. Kathy was married to the late Robert (Bob) Atkins, with whom she shared 53 years of marriage before he died in 2007. Bob was "the planner", and Kathy was the "social organizer"; together they enjoyed bridge, golf, many styles of dancing and travel. Kathy and Bob attended Webster Baptist Church while raising four children in Penfield, New York, and later moved to Georgetown Commons in Fairport and attended Fairport United Methodist Church. Kathy is survived by her four children, Sandy (Atkins) Iacucci and husband Michael Iacucci (N. Chili, NY), Teri Atkins and partner Susan Neal (Surfside Beach, SC), Linda (Atkins) McEvoy and husband Ryan McEvoy (Baltimore, MD), and Tom Atkins and wife Trayce Davis (Atlanta, GA). Kathy has six grandchildren, Sarah Sigmon (married to Jonathan Sigmon), Bethany Iacucci, Jenny Iacucci, John Iacucci, David Atkins, and LeighAnn Atkins. She recently celebrated her first great-grandson, Will Sigmon. Kathy and Bob started a tradition over 25 years ago, gathering the family for a week at the beach each summer, which has allowed everyone to remain close through the years. Music was always a big part of Kathy's life; she started playing piano at age 5 and played the alto horn in the Frostburg community band while in high school. She was proud of her accomplishments as a mother, and encouraged all of her children to learn music, taking piano lessons and participating in choral groups and theatre throughout their early education. GEVA Theatre, the Rochester Philharmonic and Perinton Concert Series were favorites of Kathy's. She and Bob went to many outdoor concerts in the area, which Kathy continued to enjoy with friends after Bob's passing. Kathy had a close group of girlfriends that dated back to her earliest years in Penfield, raising their families together. She considered herself very fortunate to be a part of their lives and enjoyed laughter and love with them all. Kathy was fortunate to live in her home up until the last year of her life. In this past year, she moved closer to Sandy, Michael and their children in N. Chili and enjoyed frequent visits from family who were finally less than 5 minutes away. The family wishes to thank Touching Hearts at Home, The Legacy at Parklands in Churchville, and Westwood Commons in N. Chili for all of their support and loving care. Those who wish may contribute to her memory to the Perinton Pride Fund (Perinton Concert Series), 1350 Turk Hill Road Fairport, NY 14450.
