Obituary of Marcus Arthur Merriman

Marcus A. Merriman of Penfield passed away peacefully on August 1, 2014 at Shepherd Home with his wife and children by his side. Marc was raised in Monona, Iowa. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Anna Lemoureux Merriman; children, Marcus (Peggy), Timothy (Nora), David (Jennifer), Susan (Marty) Walter and Michael (Tracey); 12 grandchildren; among his family, friends and colleagues he will be remembered as a man with great warmth, impressive intelligence, penetrating insight and unshakeable faith. According to David Metz, a Kodak colleague and fellow Naval Officer, "Marc was one of the good guys. He gave back a lot more of himself to the institutes with which he associated than he ever took from them." Marc attended Iowa State University as a ROTC Student and graduated with honors in 1953 receiving a B. S. degree in Industrial Engineering and a commission as a Naval Ensign. He also received his MS degree in Engineering Administration from Case Tech. He retired from Kodak as the Director of Manufacturing-Asia, Africa and Australia Region in 1986. He served with distinction as Executive Officer of a Naval Reserve Intelligence Unit in Rochester, retiring as a Navy Captain having served for 32 years. First and foremost Marc was a family man. He enjoyed nothing more than an outing with Anna and their kids, especially if it involved the youngsters in athletic or other kinds of competitive activity. Often they accompanied him when he undertook his annual active duty assignments with various Navy Commands. They played together, prayed together and shared fully in each others hopes and dreams. Marc was an active Parishioner at St. James and St. Thomas in Irondequoit and St. Joseph's in Penfield. He was also a long serving Board Member at St. Bernard's School of Theology and Ministry whose leader, Sister Patricia Scholles described him as "a lovely man of faith and brilliance who had a significant role in our schools wellbeing and growth in the way our graduates served Catholics throughout the Rochester Diocese." The Merrimans lived in the Rochester area for 50+ years, briefly in the city and then on the corner of Winona and St. Paul Boulevard in Irondequoit. When their kids had passed through Irondequoit schools and graduated college, Marc and Anna became empty nesters in their new home in Penfield. Friends may call at Jennings, Nulton & Mattle Funeral Home, 1704 Penfield Road, Penfield, Sunday, August 3rd 2-5PM. Marc's Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, August 4th 10AM at St. Joseph's Church, 43 Gebhardt Road,Penfield. Entombment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
