Obituary of Carmen J. Viglucci

Carmen J. Viglucci of Penfield died at home March 9, 2014 at age 81. He was the son of the late Helen Fitzgerald and Carmen Viglucci, memorialized as Nell and Jinx in his humorous memoir, “Albany Street Kid.” He was predeceased by two brothers, Mike and Andrew, and a sister, Helen. A Korean War Veteran, he graduated from Siena College and worked at newspapers in Albany and Syracuse before joining the Democrat and Chronicle in 1961, where he met his wife Patricia. They recently marked 50 years of marriage. He became editor of the Catholic Courier Journal in 1968. In 1976 he founded The Golden Times, a newspaper for seniors. He loved Italy. After covering the death of Pope Paul VI, he took his family there often, visiting a dozen times. He was steeped in the classics, could identify almost any piece of music and was a writer with few peers. He was an avid Yankees fan. Besides his wife, he is survived by his beloved family: children, Johanna Bartlett (Ron), John (Victoria) and Cara Santiago; grandchildren, Angel (A.J.) Santiago, Pierce and Samantha Catone, Austin, Riley and Quinn Bartlett and Tessa Viglucci; nieces and nephews, dear in-laws and loyal friends. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 am Thursday, March 13 at St. Joseph’s Church, Penfield, with a gathering afterward. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to favorite charities.
