Obituary of John C. Dovi, Jr.

John "Jack" C. Dovi Jr. of Rochester passed away peacefully Friday, June 23 at the age of 72. Born in Cortland, NY, Jack was predeceased by his father, John C. Dovi Sr., and mother, Agatha (Mazza) Dovi. He is survived by his sons, John Dovi of Cortland, and Marc (Tracy) Dovi of Walworth; sisters Agatha "Gaye" (Dan) Cipriani of Roccacasale, Italy; Anna (Fred) Erdle of Tyrone, NY; and brothers James (Michele) Dovi of Santa Fe, N.M.; and Jeff (Susan) Dovi of Cortland; his ex-wife Carol (Donald) Heifferon; grandchildren Marissa, Madeline, Mira, Spencer and Carmela, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Jack was a 1962 graduate of Cortland High School and upon graduation enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served four years and traveled the world twice over as a navigator on fighter planes. He earned an Associate's Degree from Rochester Institute of Technology while beginning his career at Xerox in 1966. He spent the next 37 years in Henrietta and Webster, working his way up from electrician on the copier line to management trainer before his retirement. Jack was a CYO basketball coach at Our Lady of Good Counsel for nearly two decades as well as a Little League baseball coach at Genesee Valley, impacting the lives of hundreds of children. He was a basketball official, and in his own description "the biggest New York football Giants fan ever." Jack loved to gamble. He also loved watching his grandchildren compete in athletics and perform in plays. Most of all he simply enjoyed life to its fullest and was always up for a good laugh. Jack wanted to pass along a parting thought: "The wise man knows when to take a bow and leave the stage." He was loved and will be missed. Upon his request, there will be no services and interment is private. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to the Shepherd Home, 1959 Five Mile Line Road, Penfield NY 14526.
