Obituary of Jane C. Askin

Jane Clougherty Askin Died December 21, 2015. Born February 5, 1926. Jane died with grace and dignity after a sudden illness. Predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Thomas W., Sr. Jane is survived by her children, Thomas, Jr. (Jan), Daniel (Zsuzsanna Dorko), Maureen (Brian Lovell), Carolyn Franz (Earl), Richard (Heidi); grandchildren, Molly Askin, Timothy Askin, Orsolya Erdelyi, Szabolcz Erdelyi, Kelly and Kathryn (Katie) Lovell, Nolan, Sean and Karen Franz, Keefe and Jarret Askin, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and good friends. Jane was born in Swissvale, Pa, the youngest of 11 children. She came from a long line of gifted, Irish storytellers. She loved a good joke and laughed easily. Family was especially important to Jane. She planned many family reunions, first for her brothers and sisters and their families and later for her children, their spouses and grandchildren. At these events, many bonds and memories were formed among extended family members. Jane attended Seton Hill College in Greensburg, PA where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. She completed her Internship in Dietetics in a Detroit, Michigan hospital to become a Registered Dietitian. She was an excellent cook and never found a recipe she couldn't improve. She made sure her family was well fed and always had well-balanced meals. Everyone looked forward to her apple and other assorted homemade pies. In 1949, she married Tom and they moved to Plainfield, NJ where their 5 children were born. In 1961 they moved to Rochester, NY. There they raised their family, were active members of St Joseph's church for over 50 years and Jane volunteered in the school. When her youngest child started school she returned to work as a Registered Dietitian and worked for over 20 years, first, at The University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital and later for the New York State Health Department. She retired in 1984. In retirement, she and Tom travelled extensively. They visited all 50 states, much of Canada, Ireland, England, Scotland, Europe, Russia, Australia and the Caribbean. She enjoyed traveling the world, but looked forward to trips to visit her children and grandchildren. She was extremely proud of her children and grandchildren and always shared stories of their achievements. She kept in frequent contact with all her family members and was happy to share family history and lore. She enjoyed entertaining, telling stories and playing in her bridge club. She was a loving Mother, Grandmother and Aunt and will be greatly missed.
