Susan Marie Sautter Shippey, 84, of Penfield, NY, passed away on March 3, 2026. Susan was born on May 17, 1941 in Detroit, MI. After graduating from Dearborn (MI) High School in 1959, she went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology in 1963 and a master’s degree in Library Science in 1964, both from the University of Michigan. She spent her career primarily as a reference librarian, working in several libraries and one elementary school until she finally landed at the Central Rochester Public Library.

            Susan met her husband, Frederick, as a student at Michigan. They worked together on the Michiganensian yearbook and in the UM Gilbert and Sullivan Society. They married in Grand Rapids, MI on August 1, 1964. Sue and Fred lived in several places around the country when Fred was on active duty in the Air Force. They then went back to Ann Arbor so Fred could enroll in graduate school, and Sue worked for the University Libraries. They moved to Penfield, NY in 1971 and raised two daughters, Elizabeth and Sara.  Susan was an active volunteer while her children were younger, volunteering as a longtime Girl Scout leader, as a parent at Cobbles Elementary, and as a member of Incarnation Episcopal Church. She was a member of her neighborhood Garden Club. Her favorite hobby was sewing, and she sewed many special items of clothing for her family over the years.

            Susan was predeceased by her parents, Donna Bernard Sautter and William L. Sautter, and by her brother, Roger W. Sautter. She is survived by her husband, Frederick, her daughters Elizabeth Ballbach (John) and Sara Tao (Peter), and her grandchildren Vee, Simon, Thomas, and Emily. The family held a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Susan’s name to the American Diabetes Association.
