Anthony F. DiLella Obituary

Anthony Frank DiLella, 91, of Penfield, New York, went to be with the Lord on November 29, 2025. Born on May 16, 1934, in Rochester, he lived a long, purposeful life defined by hard work, hospitality, and deep devotion to his family. In 1953, he honorably served two years in the military during the Korean war.

He is preceded in death by his parents Francisco and Libera DiLella, first wife Mary DiLella; second wife Beryl DiLella; daughter Debora Wera, grandchildren Leanne Farley and Anthony LoBue; siblings Rose D'Hondt, Libby Little, Michael DiLella, Constantino (Sonny) DiLella, Theresa o'Bryan, Emidio (Chuck) DiLella, Mary Dewey, and Frank DiLella.

He is survived by son-in-law Phil Farley, granddaughter Jenny Romance-Deal and great grandchildren Lexi Hughes and her husband, Garrett and Aaron Romance. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.

Before creating a legacy in the restaurant world, Tony worked as a bartender, an experience that sparked his love for serving others and ultimately led him to meet his first wife, Mary Evans. Later in life, he married Beryl Hughes, with whom he shared many cherished years.

In October 1967, Tony and his brother Mike opened Charley Brown’s Restaurant, guided by a simple and heartfelt philosophy: to serve delicious homemade food at affordable prices and personally greet every customer who walked through the door. For more than 58 years, that philosophy has remained the cornerstone of Charley Brown’s.

Whether diners chose a dish from the sauté pan, the broiler, or a creative nightly special, Tony’s dedication ensured that every plate reflected the warmth and joy he hoped to bring to others. His commitment to excellence and his reputation as a relentless workaholic became a defining part of the restaurant’s identity.

Beyond the restaurant, Tony lived a life rich with family and adventure. His granddaughter, Jenny Romance-Deal, was the apple of his eye. They shared unforgettable memories together—Jenny watching him run the restaurant, and quiet escapes to the cottage in Sodus Bay where they enjoyed peaceful boat rides. Every Christmas, Tony looked forward to reuniting with Jenny and his great-grandchildren, Lexi and Aaron, in West Palm Beach, Florida, a joyful family tradition he treasured deeply.

Tony loved to stay active, walking two miles a day well into his later years. He split his time between his homes in Penfield and West Palm Beach, enjoying the comfort and familiarity each provided. A world traveler at heart, he embraced new experiences, cultures, and places. Each summer, he also enjoyed visiting Saratoga Springs with his closest friends, where they shared their annual tradition of betting on the horse races.

For over five decades, he was supported by his longtime friends, Joe Fantauzzo and Bill Turri, who stood by his side throughout the years.

Tony’s life touched countless people, family, friends, customers, and the many employees who grew under his guidance. His legacy of warmth, generosity, and dedication will continue to inspire all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
