D. Lawrence (Larry) Keef, Jr., 93, of Fairport, passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2025. He was the loving husband of Mary Lu (Turner) Keef for 69 years.
Larry was born in New York City, son of the late Dwight Lawrence Keef and Marion D. Halladay.
Larry grew up in Rutherford, New Jersey. He excelled in football, baseball and basketball at Rutherford High School, and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. Upon graduating in 1950, Larry attended Bordentown Military Institute in New Jersey followed by William & Mary on a full football scholarship. After his freshman year, he enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, during the Korean War. Larry resumed his education at Syracuse University where he met Mary Lu.
Following graduation, he began his commercial banking career with Merchants National Bank in Syracuse. He spent the majority of his career in Rochester at Security Trust Company, Rochester Savings Bank and Monroe Savings Bank. He later served on the Fairport Savings Bank Board of Directors.
Larry’s athletic ability and passion for sports played a significant role in his life. While in Okinawa, he played baseball for the RYCOM All Stars. He was a devoted fan of Syracuse football and basketball. Larry also enjoyed playing golf and was a longtime member of Penfield Country Club.
Larry was extremely proud of his three children and six grandchildren, and following their many exploits and accomplishments was one of his greatest joys. His kindness and concern for others were some of his greatest strengths. In return, you could count on entertaining and often humorous stories of his life and encounters. Larry enjoyed meeting new people, initiating conversations and finding connections wherever he went. His kindness, positivity, good nature and sense of humor never wavered, and he will forever be a role model for us all.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lu; two daughters, Judy Marsh of Fairport, and Jenifer Parker (Charles) of Macedon; a son, James Keef (Julie) of Collegeville, PA; and six grandchildren, Allison and Jason Marsh, Leslie and Ryan Yuen, and Courtney and Claire Keef.
Private services will be held for the family. Memorial donations in Larry’s name may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
