Obituary of Megan K. Staples
Megan K. (Hines) Staples passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on March 8, 2025, following a nearly 10-year battle against cancer. Megan’s biggest accomplishment was becoming a devoted mother to Jack (13) and Charlie (10). Watching Jack play baseball, and Charlie be awarded an advanced brown belt in taekwondo were some of her proudest moments. Time spent with her loving husband, Michael, watching the boys swim while sharing a glass of wine on the deck was her greatest joy. Megan found her calling as a teacher, where her passion for history was overshadowed only by her love for every student who ever graced her classroom. On Thursday March 6, Megan’s dear friends presented her with a Golden Apple for her dedicated years of service to the Canandaigua Central School District.
Megan is predeceased by her mother, Phyllis A. (Fillmore) Hines, grandparents, Catherine and Charles F. Fillmore, Mary and William Hines, aunt and uncle, Lois and Vincent Chorney, and cousin, Matthew Merriam.
She is survived by her one true love, Michael R. Staples; two sons, Jack and Charlie Staples; father, John Hines, brothers, Michael (Keeley) Hines of Liverpool, Patrick (PJ) Hines and fiancé, Kara Rossi of Buffalo; half-sister, Teresa Melendez, of Liverpool, nieces and nephews, Gabby and Ava Hines, Carmino Rossi Hines, Matthew and Kristen Melendez; aunts, Clare (Dennis) Smith and Kathleen (Joseph) Merriam both of Webster, uncle, William Fillmore of Katy, TX; many cousins, dear family friend, Dr. Jennifer Huggins, who answered countless calls and provided love and support to not only Megan, but the entire family, mother and father-in-law, Steve and Nancy Staples, sisters-in-law Anne Staples, Joan (Staples) and Jeremy Oldroyd, nieces and nephews Lillian and Tyler Farrand, and Owen and Lauren Oldroyd.
The family wishes to express gratitude for the care and compassion provided by Dr. Mehul Patel and the staff of the Lispon Cancer Institute, and the empathy and support provided by the staff at Hildebrandt Hospice Center.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, March 13 from 4-7 p.m. at Jennings, Nulton & Mattle Funeral Home, 1704 Penfield Road, Penfield.
In lieu of flowers, a fund has been established to provide for Jack and Charlie’s education. Donations can be made at https://gofund.me/bcce769e
