Obituary of Jacquelin L. Hakes

Jacquelin Lee Hakes April 27, 1933 – August 21, 2017 Jackie, beloved wife and mother, is predeceased by her husband, Robert (Bob) Lee Hakes. She is survived by her sister, Patricia Rice, her five children, Lauren (Brian) Ostling, Stephen (Nancy) Hakes, David (Vicki) Hakes, Suzanne (John) Covell, Thomas(Rachel) Hakes as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jackie was born in Rochester and grew up in the 19th ward. She enjoyed fishing with her dad in Canada and playing the piano with her mom. She graduated from West High School in 1951. She worked at Taylor Instruments and Kodak; amazingly, she typed over 100 words per minute on the old manual typewriter! She also did some modeling for Kodak. She and Bob met at Lake Avenue Baptist Church and were married in 1956 in Rochester and started their family in 1957. They initially lived in Gates, New York and then moved to Penfield, New York in 1969 to make room for 5 active children. Jackie loved being a mother, homemaker, fan, wife and balancing all of the many activities of the children's sporting events. She enjoyed watching the Buffalo Bills, Rochester Red Wings, playing golf at Penfield Country Club and going to Rochester Amerk hockey games. Loved her walks while listening to birds! Throughout her life, her heart's passion was for the church and her personal relationship with Jesus Christ. This was her rock in every way. Her decisions and life mirrored her faith. Among many support roles within the church, she led a ladies bible study for 25 years in church and from her home. We have heard many stories from people who attended her bible studies and how much they looked forward to getting together to learn and love one another. After Bob passed away in 1992, Jackie opened her home to women that were hurting and/or in need of a place to live. She was always looking out for the needs of others and was truly inspirational. She was also an intercessory prayer warrior and prayed for her family every day. We often saw her lips move in her last days that we believe were the continued prayers for her family and friends. Her bible is filled with notes and comments about people and their needs. She volunteered time with Compass Care and Open Door Mission. Her very tangible and loving way of giving back to people has been an example to us all. We are so grateful for the favor He has given Mom and her family. We believe it is through the faithfulness of our Lord working through Mom that our family has such unity and peace during these last years of declining health. We love you, Mom, and we know you are dancing!! We'll see you soon… "Proverbs 3:5…Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on our own understanding but on all ways acknowledge Him and He will guide our paths." A service to celebrate Jackie's life and legacy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at New Covenant Fellowship located at 1350 Five Mile Line Road, Penfield NY 14526. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Open Door Mission, 156 Plymouth Avenue North, Rochester, NY 14608
