Obituary of Virginia W. Turner

Virginia "Ginny" Turner of Fairport, NY passed away peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 1 at the age of 85. Born in Rochester, Ginny was predeceased by her husband Charles Turner and son John Turner. She is survived by son James (Connie) Turner of Irondequoit; daughter Kimberly (Mark) Spangler of Summerville, S.C.; son Charles (Sondra) Turner of Fort Myers, Fla.; daughter Jane (Darrin) Evans of Cordova, Alaska; and daughter Tracy (Marc) Dovi of Rochester; grandchildren Kelly, Erin, Madeline, Lily and Spencer; great-grandchildren Christopher, James and Liam; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ginny, the daughter of Howard and Mildred Wackerman, was a graduate of Brighton High School. She married Charles (Chuck) in 1952 and raised six children. Virginia's life can be described by the elements – fire, water, earth. A staunch supporter of all firefighters and the volunteer fire service; she was the daughter, wife and mother of fire commissioners during her 85 years. She loved water, being near it and on it, and would fondly recall summer visits as a child to Pultneyville to walk and explore Lake Ontario. Ginny also loved the land and everything that grew from it, especially flowers. She spent decades working as a florist at various shops around Rochester – opening her own store at one point. Ginny was a news junkie before the internet made that a phrase and she was fascinated with learning. Virginia was an exceptional cook and fed an army of her children's friends who were always welcome in their Irondequoit home. She couldn't pass up an animal without wanting to take it home. She loved to laugh, loved a good Scotch and saw the good in the world through the most beautiful blue eyes. She was loved and will be missed. Calling hours are 4-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10 at Jennings, Nulton and Mattle Funeral Home. Internment is private. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Shepherd Home (1959 Five Mile Line Road, Penfield 14526) in her memory.
